NUNSA NATIONAL ADMINISTRATIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS HISTORY
1966-2004: UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN
NUNSA was first established in the University of Ibadan a year after the start of Bachelor in Nursing Science from the said University, and a group of Nursing Students’ which are yet not known piloted the affairs of the association till the establishment of subsequent department of Nursing Science in other universities.
LATE NR. BABALOLA LED ADMINISTRATION 2004-2006
Late Comr. Babalola revitalized the association in 2005 when he hosted a national meeting at Ibadan in the month of August. The meeting planned to host a national convention and set up a 5-man committee to plan the event. His death in 2006 was a great impediment that hindered every activity until Comr. Obinna Okafor and Comr. Nshi Goodluck continued with the revitalization journey (Nr. Chidinu Christian, 2021). According to Mr. Sambo from Niger Delta University (2021), Babalola was present from 2004 until he died in 2006 on his way to West African College of Nursing. He functioned for two (2) tenures before transiting to glory.
5-MAN INTERIM COMMITTEE LED ADMINISTRATION 2007-2009.
Joseph Chibuzo Anyanwu who served as the UNEC NUNSA president 2005/2006 and NUNSA National Secretary from 2004- 2006 and UGONSA aka GNAN’s National Secretary 2008-2014 was the leader of the 5 man committee that piloted NUNSA affairs until 2009. The committee mobilized branch excos towards forming a new NUNSA National body. Thier then president died while in active service and was not replaced immediately due to obvious reasons (all the then executives graduated during his mourning period). However, the 5 men committee worked towards the formation of the new NUNSA. Joseph, the committee head, was present at the inaugural meeting of the new NUNSA. He gave the history of NUNSA journey so far and the challenges that awaited undergraduate nurses after graduation. He also delivered a speech on the need to attend the UGONSA meeting aka GNAN 2009 meeting at Agbor. It was at Agbor that proper rebirth of NUNSA took place, under the nurture of GNAN. Mr. Nwodoh Oliver, Mr. Obinna Okafor, Mr. Goodluck Nshi, Mr. Nwodo Chijoke and Mr. Sambo contributed positively towards the formation of the new National body. Following the marginalization of graduate Nurses in the then Federal salary scheme, where graduate nurses were placed on grade level 7, while Physiotherapy, Medical Laboratory and Radiography graduates from the same faculty were placed on level 9, and NANNM was comfortable with it. For that reason and some selfish agenda, as aclaimed by Joseph, NANMN executives with the millions of unaccounted 3% check off dues they (the committee) had to joined GNAN and initiated the struggle for proper placement of graduate Nurses. History will not forget the efforts of Chief Solomon Egwuenu, and Mr. Goodluck Nshi and a host of others who initiated the struggle for internship for graduate Nurses. There is still a lot to do for Nigerian Nursing Profession. This can be achieved better and faster with the active participation of graduate Nurses in UGONSA .” –Nr. Joseph Chibuzo Anyanwu. NN Past Leader (2021)
“NUNSA in 2007-2009 had the care taker committee of five 5-man Interim government which was formed in August 2006 at the University of Ibadan to carry on with the association and amend the then national constitution that committee had; these were Comrade Sambo Baralate from NDU, Comrade Jegede the then LAUTECH president, Comrade Chinedu from EBSU and 2 others.” –Nr. Sambo NDU (2021)
In 2007, Comrade Sambo, then a student and immediate past president NUNSA NDU following an admonition by the then NANNM national President called for a delegate meeting in Bayelsa and made all arrangements to host 14 Universities. None of the invited schools appeared on that day and not even any other member of the caretaker committee.
In 2008, Comrade Sambo, then a corper posted to EBSU and Comrade Chinedu liaised with Comrade Obinna and Nshi goodluck to convene the Enugu 2009 delegate meeting that birthed the modern day NUNSA. According to Nr. Chidinu Christian (2021, during the revitalization at Enugu, Nwodoh Chijioke Oliver (UNN president) was the host while the meeting was presided over by Comrade Chidobu Christian and Comr Sambo L. It was in that meeting presided over by 2 of the 5-man care taker committee set up in 2006 (Sambo and Chinedu) that Comrade Obinna was nominated and unanimously elected to become National Chairman/ president — Comr. CJ

Apart from the seminars, football matches were played between the SON & Universities (Aug. & Sept. 2010)

We (including the composer), also visited NANNM and NMCN with CD copies of the anthem and proposed that the anthem be adopted as the official anthem for Nigeria Nurses. We are proud that today, it is the National Nurses Anthem. Jane Ogugua currently has a copyright on the anthem, as it is her global right and intellectual property.

Nursing Internship Struggles
NUNSA National officials appeals for the commencement of internship for graduate nurses in Nigeria hospitals
Date Posted: 06/Sep/2017
The Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation in September 2016 issued a circular on the approval of the internship for graduates of the B.N. Sc. programme and incorporation of the programme into the Scheme of Service of the Federation. Based on the above, the Council has completed arrangements for the commencement of the internship from January 2017.”
The above message on the website of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria caused widespread jubilation among undergraduate nursing students and all who mean well for the Nursing profession in Nigeria. However, more than eight months later, the battle for the commencement of internship for graduate nurses is still on. Only University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Lagos University Teaching Hospital and the National Hospital Abuja are said to have placed adverts for intern nurses.
Nigerian University Nursing Student Association(NUNSA) National have written letters to all the Chief Medical Directors(CMD’s) in Nigeria to request for the commencement of the internship for graduate nurses. In a chat with our correspondent at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, the Acting General Secretary of the association, Comr. Aniefuna Chinaza, said it was unacceptable for Teaching Hospitals to publish internship job adverts without including nurses. “We are calling on all CMD’s in Nigeria to please ensure that nurses are included in their adverts for interns. We commend the CMD’s of University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Lagos University Teaching Hospital and National Hospital Abuja for setting the pace and call on other CMD’s to emulate them “.
The Director of Socials of the association, Comr. Okeke Odira Linda said Internship for graduate nurses was a right and not a privilege. She said internship is meant to bridge the gap between theory and practice and produce truly polyvalent graduate nurses.
The Clerk of the National Senate of NUNSA, Senator Fii Tornubari Samuel, commended the efforts of the executives to ensure the kick starting of internship in hospitals across Nigeria. “As an association committed to ensuring the progress of the nursing profession, we made a case for the commencement of internship and we won. We will not relent in our struggle until every graduate nurse earns a place in a hospital to perfect his/her professional skill through the internship programme.” The Clerk of the senate also said it was appalling that nurses were left out of the internship adverts of some teaching hospitals despite the approval of the scheme by the ministry of health. According to him, “Graduate nurses can no longer enroll for the NYSC scheme without the mandatory 1 year internship programme. So non-implementation of internship for graduate by CMD’s this year amounts to subjecting them to staying at home for one year after graduation. We cannot fold our arms and watch our graduates go through that.”
Comr. Aniefuna said the letter from NUNSA national appealing for the commencement of internship have reached the offices of the CMD’s of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH), University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital(UPTH), Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital, Jos University Teaching Hospital and other teaching hospitals in Nigeria.
